He retired from college coaching in 2017 but returned as the Sooners' interim coach in 2021 when Lincoln Riley left for USC. Stoops joined the XFL in 2019 and returned when the league restarted in 2021. In 2023, the Renegades won the XFL championship. He has coached the last two years in the rebranded UFL."
Bob Stoops, 65, is retiring from coaching and stepping away from football after a long career spanning college and alternative professional leagues. Stoops posted a 191-48 record at Oklahoma and won the 2000 BCS national championship, along with 10 Big 12 titles over 18 seasons. He retired from college coaching in 2017, served as Oklahoma's interim coach in 2021, and then coached in the XFL beginning in 2019. Stoops led the Dallas Renegades to the 2023 XFL championship and coached in the rebranded UFL for the last two seasons. He expressed gratitude for coaching and thanked fans for allowing him to be part of the game.
