Emmitt Smith became the NFL's career rushing leader in 2002 during his 13th year with the Dallas Cowboys. Owner Jerry Jones released Smith after that season for salary-cap reasons and to inject youth into the roster. At 34, Smith signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals and returned to Dallas emotionally, later signing a one-day contract to finish his career with the Cowboys.
