Push begins to bring a 49ers game to Hawaii after stadium renovation
"Aloha Stadium was the home for the University of Hawaii's football team and an annual college football bowl game before it was condemned in 2020. After years of talks and planning, the stadium is finally set to be demolished. A new 22,500-seat stadium is slated to be built on the same location. The project was finally approved in August of this year, with Hawaii taxpayers on the hook for $350 million for the stadium but millions more needed."
""I would love to see the 49ers," Green said on KHON-TV's " Wake Up 2Day " morning show. "I'm going to be talking to the 49ers about a special agreement here for Oahu. I would love to see the Chargers and the Raiders and the Rams all part of this. And all of you guys should then earn the right to play my Steelers here someday.""
Aloha Stadium will be demolished and replaced by a new 22,500-seat venue on the same site. Hawaii taxpayers are already committed to $350 million for the project, but additional private funding remains necessary. State officials are courting NFL franchises and technology billionaires to help cover the shortfall and to attract preseason and regular-season games to Oahu. Proposals include courting specific franchises such as the 49ers, Chargers, Raiders, Rams, and Steelers. The stadium previously hosted the Pro Bowl annually from 1980 into the 2010s and has hosted NFL preseason games and professional team training activities in past decades.
