After 12 years away, Germany's women's hockey team gets an unexpected chance
"For the first time in twelve years, Germany's women's hockey team will be playing at the Winter Olympics. When Germany last contested the women's hockey event at the Winter Olympics, the team finished third in Group B before securing seventh place courtesy of the 5th-8th place bracket. Since that 2014 Winter Olympics, Germany was relegated and then promoted back to the IIHF Women's World Championship."
"Of the twenty-three players named to Germany's roster, just three play their club hockey in the PWHL. In addition, just seven players total play their club hockey outside of Europe. The remaining sixteen roster members are either part of Germany's domestic women's hockey league or another European hockey league. All across this Germany lineup, there are connections between members of the rosters."
Germany returns to Olympic women's hockey after a 12-year absence, with its last appearance culminating in a seventh-place finish following a third-place Group B result in 2014. The program experienced relegation and later promotion back to the IIHF Women's World Championship, reached the 2017 bronze medal game, then recorded three eighth-place finishes across subsequent tournaments. The 23-player Olympic roster is heavily Europe-based, with only three players in the PWHL and seven playing outside Europe; sixteen compete in domestic or other European leagues. Multiple roster connections exist, including twins Lille and Luisa Welcke and several players concentrated at ECDC Memmingen and Eisbären Juniors Berlin. Germany must challenge hosts Italy and debutants France to secure a knockout-place threshold of third in Group B.
