NHL Rumours: Laine Trade Coming, Toews' Decision & Oilers Bottom-Six - The Hockey Writers NHL Rumors Latest News, Analysis & More
"When the Montreal Canadiens brought in Patrik Laine, he was supposed to come in and provide them some much-needed scoring help. His regular-season debut came later than anticipated, but when he did join the team, he was scoring tons for them. Now, the Canadiens are without him for the start of the season again, and nearly to the end of February, but he is expected to be healthy after the Olympic break."
"Eric Engles spoke with Kent Hughes on Feb. 5 and speculated that the Canadiens may need to attach an asset, as well as retain some significant salary on Laine, if they want to move him. Hughes didn't comment on Laine specifically, but did note that it was clear the team had too many players, especially with some getting healthy, like Laine. Marco D'Amico named the Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, and Seattle Kraken as potential destinations."
Patrik Laine is expected to be healthy after the Olympic break and could be traded afterward. The Montreal Canadiens have performed well without Laine, sitting second in the Atlantic Division and scoring plenty, which creates doubt about fitting his $8.7 million cap hit. The Canadiens may need to attach an asset and retain significant salary to move Laine, with Kent Hughes noting roster congestion as injured players return. The Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings and Seattle Kraken are named as possible destinations. The Flames have salary space with Jonathan Huberdeau out and could consider an extension. Jonathan Toews must decide whether to remain with Winnipeg or pursue a contender. The Edmonton Oilers are searching for a bottom-six forward willing to accept that role.
