During a practice with the Washington Commanders, New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel actively participated in drills, resulting in a bloodied cheek. Quarterback Drake Maye praised Vrabel's approach to building team intensity and competitiveness. Maye acknowledged the physical nature of the game and stressed the importance of playing hard during practice. The incident occurred after a rookie running back executed a block, leading to a pile-up of players. There were no ejections, and the practice continued with an emphasis on maintaining focus and aggression without crossing the line.
"That's what we're trying to build and it starts with the head coach -- intensity, bringing it every day, taking no crap when we're out there on the field," quarterback Drake Maye said.
"Pass pro is physical. It's a physical game. Things happen out there," Maye said. "...when the whistle is going play hard, and when the whistle stops, get off and get away."
"The team will go back and review the film of Vrabel in the scrum," Maye joked after the practice incident where Vrabel incurred a bloodied cheek.
Veteran offensive tackle Morgan Moses referred to Vrabel as a players coach, noting his background and approach to the game.
