Three new identifications of victims from the September 11 attacks were announced by the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The victims identified are Ryan Fitzgerald, Barbara Keating, and an unnamed woman, bringing the total identified to 1653. Advanced DNA technology and new samples from relatives aided these identifications. There are still approximately 1,100 unidentified victims. Mayor Eric Adams and Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jason Graham emphasized the importance of these identifications for the families affected by the tragedy and the commitment to honoring the lost.
The pain of losing a loved one in the September 11th terror attacks echoes across the decades, but with these three new identifications, we take a step forward in comforting the family members still aching from that day.
Each new identification testifies to the promise of science and sustained outreach to families despite the passage of time. We continue this work as our way of honoring the lost.
