Patrick Mahomes shows he's still got it; too soon to know what Jaxson Dart has
"The name of Patrick Mahomes has been used around the Giants for years. It goes all the way back to when head coach Ben McAdoo was lobbying for the Giants to draft him in 2017. He was already off the board and selected by Kansas City by the time they got around to picking Evan Engram. Then general manager Dave Gettleman began evoking Mahomes after he drafted Daniel Jones with Eli Manning already on the roster in 2019."
"More recently, Mahomes became the model for Jaxson Dart, the latest Giants quarterback to be drafted with the hope that he could one day develop into a champion through the process of sitting and watching a veteran. So far the Giants have held firm to that plan, sprinkling Dart in on a number of plays through the first three games without any extended appearances while Russell Wilson has been their starter."
"The most remarkable of the plays came late in the second quarter when Mahomes was able to roll to his right outrunning Darius Alexander and Abdul Carter and sprinting all the way to the Giants' sideline before pulling up and launching a deep desperation pass. It wasn't caught, but it would have been better for the Giants if it had been because Kansas City had no timeouts."
Ben McAdoo lobbied for Patrick Mahomes in 2017 but Mahomes was already selected by Kansas City before the Giants picked Evan Engram. Dave Gettleman referenced Mahomes when drafting Daniel Jones in 2019 and briefly considered the "Kansas City Model" of letting a rookie sit for a year. Mahomes later became the developmental model for Jaxson Dart, who has been used sparingly while Russell Wilson starts. Kansas City beat New York 22-9 at MetLife Stadium. Mahomes produced several dangerous plays, including a long scramble to the Giants' sideline and a deep desperation pass near halftime.
