The officials unfurled the banner after demanding access to the holding cells and being denied entry by DHS agents. NYPD officers arrested another group of elected officials and activists outside the facility for attempting to block its driveway. Arrested officials included state Sens. Julia Salazar and Jabari Birsport and multiple Assembly and City Council members. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and colleagues acted in nonviolent civil disobedience to demand oversight of ICE's detention practices.
