Sailor Snaps Photo of Black Iceberg With Dark Veins
Briefly

An unusual black iceberg spotted off Northeastern Canada has generated significant interest online after fisherman Hallur Antoniussen photographed it. The iceberg, about three times the size of surrounding icebergs, was noted for its striking diamond shape and rock-like appearance. Observers have speculated about its dark color, with suggestions ranging from oil contamination to volcanic ash from an ancient volcano. Physicist Lev Tarasov mentioned that while smaller black icebergs have been seen in Greenland, the origins of this particular iceberg remain uncertain due to the lack of knowledge about underwater volcanoes.
"It's something you don't see very often," Antoniussen said. "I just ran to my room and took my phone and snapped this picture."
According to Lev Tarasov, a physicist and glacier expert from Newfoundland's Memorial University, ash from an ancient, icebound volcano could be the culprit - but it's hard to say for sure, because scientists don't yet know how many such volcanoes exist.
