Aaron Boone announced that Devin Williams is being removed from the Yankees' closer position due to his inadequate performance since joining from Milwaukee. Following a disappointing outing and a blown save against the Blue Jays, Boone decided that stepping back was necessary for Williams to regain his confidence. Luke Weaver is expected to take on closing duties for the time being, although Boone indicated he would utilize various pitchers in that capacity moving forward.
"He's just going through it a little bit," Boone said before the Yankees doubleheader against the Blue Jays Sunday. "We think it's best for everyone to pull him out of that role and start building that confidence."
The move comes after another blown save for Williams in Friday's loss to Toronto. Boone wants to rebuild Williams' confidence before reassigning him to closer.
