Mellon Foundation Gives Humanities Councils Emergency Funds
Briefly

The Mellon Foundation has announced a $15 million emergency fund for state humanities councils, following a $65 million cut from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Established in 1971 to promote public educational programming, these councils face potential closures and service reductions due to reduced funding. The allocation includes $200,000 operational support for each of the 56 councils and challenge grants to encourage additional funding from other sources. Leaders emphasize that this support is critical for sustaining cultural institutions and fostering civic engagement in American life.
"At stake are both the operational integrity of organizations like museums, libraries, historical societies in every single state, as well as the mechanisms to participate in the cultural dynamism and exchange that is a fundamental part of American civic life."
"Mellon's support allows us to not only preserve this vital network-it helps ensure that everyday Americans can thrive through lifelong learning, connection, and understanding of one another."
