A meteor exploded over New England
A meteor streaked over the northeastern US at about 2:06 pm ET and exploded north of Cape Cod Bay, with footage from multiple observers and visibility in satellite imagery. The shaking and boom led some residents to suspect an earthquake, but the USGS attributed it to a widely felt sonic boom from a suspected bolide. NASA characterized it as a bright fireball accompanied by a loud noise. NASA estimated the object traveled at roughly 75,000 miles per hour, fragmented at about 40 miles altitude over northeast Massachusetts and southeast New Hampshire, and released energy equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT. NASA also stated it was not linked to any currently active meteor shower and was not re-entry of space debris or a satellite.
