Donald Hartill, a prominent figure in particle physics, passed away at 86, leaving a legacy at Cornell spanning over fifty years. He greatly impacted the university’s research infrastructure, notably through his leadership in the design of the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and the development of high-energy physics programs such as CLEO. His innovative work on CESR's magnet system significantly extended its operational life. Hartill was a respected leader whose contributions shaped both experimental physics and the community culture at Cornell, demonstrating lasting influence through challenging times.
"Don's development of CESR's uniquely tunable magnet system extended the facility's lifetime by decades and enabled its transition across multiple generations of research," said Ritchie Patterson.
"Beyond the lab, Don's steady leadership - especially during times of uncertainty - left an enduring mark on the culture and strength of Cornell's physics community."
