A recent study from the SETI Institute and UC Davis reveals that humpback whales create bubble rings while interacting with humans, showcasing a unique form of communication that reflects their friendly and curious nature. Documented incidents involved 11 whales producing 39 rings near boats across various locations. The implications of this behavior extend beyond marine biology, as researchers believe that understanding whale communication could inform methods for detecting extraterrestrial intelligence, supporting the idea that intelligent life across the universe may also seek contact.
Because of current limitations on technology, an important assumption of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is that extraterrestrial intelligence and life will be interested in making contact and so target human receivers, understanding their own evolution encourages curiosity and communication.
This study demonstrates that humpbacks not only communicate through typical methods but also through playful and artistic expressions like bubble rings, showcasing a friendly interaction with humans.
