A team of scientists has developed COSMOS-Web, an interactive map of the universe that lets users explore nearly 800,000 galaxies from home, dating back 13.5 billion years. This map, which covers the sky area equivalent to three full moons, utilizes over 10,000 images from the James Webb Space Telescope. Previously complex data has been simplified for public access, allowing users to zoom in on galaxies and discover detailed information, with hopes of engaging the public in astronomical research.
Our goal was to construct this deep field of space on a physical scale that far exceeded anything that had been done before.
So it's really strikingly large.
The researchers have made this available to the public in the hopes that more people will be able to help dig into the data and unpick some of the universe's most puzzling questions.
In the stunning interactive map, at this link, you can zoom out to see hundreds of thousands of galaxies stretch across the sky or zoom in to reveal amazing details.
