Sharks high on COCAINE are marauding the seas around the Bahamas
"'They bite things to investigate and end up exposed to substances', lead author Natascha Wosnick told Science News."
"What makes this study notable is not just the detection of pharmaceuticals and cocaine in nearshore sharks, but the associated shifts in metabolic markers.'"
For the first time, cocaine, caffeine, and painkillers have been detected in the blood of sharks in the Bahamas. Researchers found these substances while studying sharks around Eleuthera Island. The sharks did not exhibit unusual behavior, but the presence of these drugs suggests human substances are infiltrating wild ecosystems. The study revealed that caffeine was the most common substance, with cocaine found in two sharks. Changes in metabolic markers were also observed, raising concerns about potential impacts on shark behavior.
