A map, a myth and a pre-Incan lagoon: the man who brought water back to a drought-ridden town
Briefly

In 1983, historian Galo Ramon uncovered a boundary dispute linked to an old map, revealing a forgotten water management system of the ancient Paltas civilization in Ecuador. This system, shown through a lagoon on a 1792 map, inspired Ramon to recreate it, addressing the region’s historical water shortages. With 40 years of effort, the project has revitalized the ecosystem, providing reliable water resources amidst ongoing drought challenges. Ramon's personal ties to the area and commitment to improving water accessibility highlight his dedication to historical knowledge and environmental sustainability.
I was born in Paltas, where people have very little water. Although I don't live there any more, I was eager to contribute with my knowledge.
Ramon set out to recreate the Paltas' lagoon system and, 40 years on, the region has enjoyed an environmental regeneration, offering solutions for Ecuador which regularly faces severe droughts.
