GitHub Announces Public Preview of GitHub MCP Server
Briefly

GitHub recently introduced its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, currently in public preview, which enables developers to automate and interact with GitHub APIs through AI capabilities. Built in partnership with Anthropic, the MCP server enhances usability and maintains compatibility with GitHub’s previous server. With features like customizable tool descriptions and natural language support for interactions, MCP standardizes connectivity to large language models, allowing a broad range of users to implement advanced AI solutions with ease. Major companies like AWS and Azure are already embracing this innovation.
MCP takes a lot of its inspiration from LSP, and could be absolutely transformative for AI tooling. It allows for everyone, from the largest tech giants to the smallest indie developer shops, to enable robust AI solutions in any AI client with minimal setup.
The new MCP server introduces capabilities such as customizable tool descriptions, code scanning support, and a get_me function that enhances natural language interactions with private repositories.
