"I try to get all my schoolwork done on Monday, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, so that Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, I can focus on the dog shows,"
"All of it? It's one big, continuous loop, pretty much."
"I've seen the life of a handler, and it's really stressful,"
"So I would rather not."
Emerson Jaquish began showing dogs at age nine after her mother bought a saluki that required being shown. She learned handling from Jody Davidson and qualified for the Westminster Dog Show multiple times in Junior Showmanship. She now typically shows dachshunds and works as an assistant handler for professional Erin Karst while attending online college. She schedules schoolwork early in the week to dedicate several consecutive days to shows. Typical shows involve bathing, cleaning, and managing about a dozen dogs; Westminster reduces her workload to two dogs. She finds the handler life stressful and does not plan to turn professional.
