Worked perfectly': how wildlife team finally caught Valerie the dachshund after 529 days on the lam
Briefly

After 529 days evading capture on Kangaroo Island, Valerie the dachshund was successfully retrieved by the Kangala Wildlife Rescue team using a specially designed trap. Directors Jared and Lisa Karran revealed their careful strategy, which included gradually familiarizing Valerie with comforting items. A webcam and remote trigger allowed them to secure her without risk of escape. Once Valerie felt at home in the trap, they capitalized on her willingness to explore and finally captured her when she rummaged for food. Valerie handled her capture well, showing signs of relief and calmness afterward.
There was no way we were letting that sausage dog run away on us again, Jared said, expressing the team's determination to secure Valerie this time.
Kangala described it as like her own little room with her toys and bed from home, aiming to make Valerie comfortable enough to enter the trap.
We finally got that opportunity. The tiny 4kg dog came in and rummaged around for hidden food stashes, at which point they could capture her.
She just curled up and went to sleep after her capture, showing that Valerie handled the situation with calmness.
