A significant data breach at Clinical Diagnostics NMDL laboratory in Rijswijk compromised the personal data of over 485,000 women involved in cervical cancer screening. Hackers accessed sensitive information such as names, addresses, and social security numbers between July 3 and 6 but the laboratory informed authorities only a month later. The Dutch National Population Screening Program has halted collaboration with the laboratory, while reliability of past test results remains unaffected. An increase in fraud risk has been noted, prompting advisory alerts for participants.
"We are deeply shocked by this data breach," said Elza den Hertog, chair of the Executive Board. "Participating in the cervical cancer screening program is already stressful enough for many women. And now they are being told that their personal data may have been leaked."
The data breach has no impact on the reliability of cervical cancer screenings that have already been carried out. Women who have previously had a test do not need to participate again.
