Hide from Meta's spyglasses with this new Android app
"Bluetooth devices broadcast small advertising packets. Even though MAC addresses (identifying a particular device) and service UUIDs (identifying what they are doing) are randomized, manufacturer company IDs in BLE advertising frames are mandatory and immutable. The app scans for manufacturer identifiers in the BLE ADV frames."
"This app notifies you when smart glasses are nearby. It uses company [identifiers] in the Bluetooth data sent out by these [devices]. The app may produce false positives from other Bluetooth hardware by the same manufacturer, such as Meta VR headsets, so users should proceed with caution when approaching someone wearing glasses."
Yves Jeanrenaud, a deputy professor at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, developed Nearby Glasses, an Android application that alerts users when smart glasses are in their vicinity. The app works by scanning Bluetooth Low Energy advertising packets for manufacturer company identifiers, which remain mandatory and immutable even when device MAC addresses and service UUIDs are randomized. The application specifically targets Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses and similar devices. Jeanrenaud cautioned that false positives may occur from other Bluetooth devices by the same manufacturer, such as Meta VR headsets. The app repository includes warnings against harassing individuals based on suspected surveillance, reflecting growing social concerns about non-consensual recording through wearable technology.
