Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has voiced concern over Iranian state media reports alleging the messaging app is being used for espionage by Israel. In response to calls for citizens to delete the app, Meta clarified that WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted and emphasized that they do not track users' locations or share data with governments. The company stated that such misinformation could lead to unnecessary blocking of essential services at a critical time for the citizens of Iran.
We're concerned these false reports will be an excuse for our services to be blocked at a time when people need them the most.
We do not provide bulk information to any government...Meta has provided consistent transparency reports that include the limited circumstances when WhatsApp information has been requested.
