US lawmakers are urging the Trump administration to reassess its data-sharing agreement with the UK, sparked by concerns over a UK legal order demanding Apple to compromise their encryption services. This order could allow the UK to exploit US-UK law enforcement data-sharing under the Cloud Act, potentially jeopardizing user privacy worldwide. Politicians from both parties express dismay, highlighting that the balance of data requests heavily favors UK demands over US requests, and calling for immediate action to curb such future orders from the UK.
Unfortunately, one of our closest allies, the United Kingdom, is taking advantage of its authorities under the Cloud Act and is attacking America's data security and privacy.
This is a dangerous precedent, and if not stopped now, could lead to future orders by other countries.
