An investigation by The Markup and CalMatters has revealed that state-run health care exchange websites are improperly transmitting visitors' sensitive health data, such as prescription details and medical histories, to companies like Google and social media platforms. During audits of the 19 state-operated online health exchanges established under the Affordable Care Act, four states were found to be leaking this critical information. For instance, Nevada Health Link not only asks users about their prescriptions but sends this data to LinkedIn and Snapchat when they fill in their answers. Maine and Rhode Island exchanges were also found guilty of transmitting similar sensitive data to Google.
Nevada's exchange, Nevada Health Link, asks visitors about what prescriptions they use...as visitors answered the questions, their responses were sent to LinkedIn and Snapchat.
Maine's exchange, CoverME.gov, sent information on drug prescriptions and dosages...It also sent the names of doctors and hospitals that people had previously visited.
