A Scottish woman, Denise Parks, won a legal case against LG after a judge found that her LG K8 smartphone caused a house fire in 2018. The Edinburgh Sheriff Court awarded Parks £149,496 in damages, which included compensation for her insurer who had previously paid out £95,385.75. Forensics experts determined that the LG K8 showed significant fire damage, whereas the other devices charging at the time, an Acer laptop and a Samsung Galaxy S7, were mostly undamaged. The phone was being charged using an HTC charger, which was not substantially damaged during the incident.
Sheriff Robert Fife ruled that the LG K8 smartphone, supplied by North Lanarkshire Council, was the most likely cause of a fire that damaged Denise Parks' home.
