Florida is set to become the second state to ban fluoride in public drinking water, after Utah. This decision follows a campaign led by US health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr., who opposes community water fluoridation. The bill, which will now be reviewed by Governor Ron DeSantis, could have serious implications for dental health, as fluoride is recognized for preventing cavities. The American Dental Association warns that this ban could harm vulnerable populations and negatively impact public health, while proponents argue for consumer protection against additives.
Blindly calling for a ban on fluoridated water hurts people, costs money, and will ultimately harm our economy, said Brett Kessler, president of the American Dental Association.
The addition of low levels of fluoride to drinking water is considered among the greatest public health achievements of the last century, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
