How to Talk About Vaping Risk with Teens
"If you're a parent today, chances are you're worried about vaping-even if you haven't said it out loud. E-cigarettes and vape devices are everywhere teens are: on social media, in school bathrooms, at parties, and sometimes right under our noses. What makes this especially hard is that many parents don't know what to say, when to say it, or how to say it without triggering defensiveness or unintentionally making vaping more appealing."
"Vaping refers to inhaling an aerosol created by an electronic device, such as e-cigarettes, vape pens, mods, or disposable vapes. Teens may call them vapes, Juuls, Puff Bars, or simply "hitting a vape." One important clarification for parents: This aerosol is not harmless water vapor. Vape products often contain nicotine, flavoring chemicals, and other substances that carry real health risks."
Teen vaping is common and visible in places teens frequent, including social media, school bathrooms, and parties. Parents often feel uncertain about how to discuss vaping without provoking defensiveness or making it more appealing. Conversations should avoid fear-based tactics because they produce temporary compliance without building judgment, discernment, or trust. 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey data show e-cigarettes as the most used tobacco product among adolescents: 8.1% of high school students reported current tobacco use and 5.9% reported e-cigarette use. Daily vaping signals addiction rather than experimentation. Vaping aerosols often contain nicotine, flavoring chemicals, and other substances that can alter adolescent brain development, affecting attention, impulse control, and emotional regulation.
