Large number of measles cases being missed, CDC says
Briefly

In a recent meeting, CDC official Dr. David Sugerman revealed that there are likely many undetected cases of measles amid this year's outbreak, which has seen over 700 reported cases, particularly concentrated in Texas. The unprecedented nature of the outbreak has raised concerns, especially following three deaths attributed to measles in unvaccinated individuals. Sugerman highlighted that many cases may go unreported due to families not seeking testing or treatment. Additionally, Dr. Edwin Jose Asturias indicated that the case fatality rate observed is alarmingly higher than expected for measles, raising doubts about the scale of the outbreak.
"In working very closely with our colleagues in Texas. In talking with families, they may mention prior cases that have recovered and never received testing, other families that may have cases and never had sought treatment."
"When one looks at the two deaths of school-aged children, and looks at the 41 cases that Lubbock has reported, one comes up with a case fatality rate of about 4.8%, which is way above what we know that is the case fatality rate of measles."
