Revealed: Breakdown of air-ambulance rescue missions by accident
"Helicopter ambulance crews have been scrambled to treat thousands of patients over the past decade in Ireland - but mission success rates drop during the winter, a new study shows. The research shows mission success falls from 66pc in summer to 51pc in winter, reflecting the fact that both of the country's helicopter bases - in the south and the midlands - operate a daylight-only service. This means operating hours range from 17 hours in summer - to as little as eight hours in winter."

Approximately 8,400 helicopter emergency medical service missions were mapped across Ireland over the past decade. Helicopter ambulance crews responded to thousands of patients during that period. Mission success rates decline seasonally, dropping from 66% in summer to 51% in winter. Both helicopter bases, located in the south and the midlands, operate daylight-only services. Daylight-only operation reduces available flying hours from about 17 hours in summer to as little as eight hours in winter, which corresponds with the observed lower mission success during winter months.
