Silicon Valley community college district buys workforce housing - San Jose Spotlight
"The Foothill-De Anza Community College District board unanimously approved a roughly $54.5 million purchase of 50 affordable apartments for staff earlier this month. The district will buy the empty apartments at 699 N. Shoreline Blvd. as part of an agreement with Mountain View Whisman School District, which owns and operates the 144-apartment complex as workforce housing for 53 households. About 20 apartments are reserved for Mountain View city employees."
"Peter Landsberger, college district board president, said he supports the purchase because securing affordable workforce housing is part of Measure G's promises - and it's the right thing to do. Measure G, a $898 million bond voters passed in 2020, will fund the purchase. "We try to compensate adequately, but the living in this area, it's still a challenge," he told San José Spotlight. "(Staff does) a lot of good work. They deserve to have a decent place to live.""
Foothill-De Anza Community College District approved a roughly $54.5 million purchase of 50 affordable apartments at 699 N. Shoreline Blvd. The purchase is part of an agreement with Mountain View Whisman School District, which owns a 144-apartment workforce housing complex reserved for 53 households, with about 20 units set aside for Mountain View city employees. The elementary district has more reserved affordable units than current staff demand, making the sale financially sustainable. Any household earning under 150% of the area median income will be eligible under Mountain View policy. The purchase aims to address local staff housing shortages and will be funded by Measure G.
