Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's call for a three-day ceasefire around Victory Day on May 9, labeling it a manipulation tactic. Zelensky stated that Ukraine has always sought peace and cooperation to end the war, but insists that any ceasefire should be immediate, full, and unconditional. He argues that waiting for the proposed ceasefire undermines the value of human lives, as it merely caters to Putin's celebratory needs while perpetuating the violence.
We in Ukraine never wanted a single second of this war - and we have always said that we are ready to work as swiftly as possible with all partners who can help establish peace and guarantee security.
Now, yet again, another attempt at manipulation: for some reason, everyone is supposed to wait until 8 May before ceasing fire - just to provide Putin with silence for his parade. We value human lives, not parades.
The ceasefire should not be just for a few days, only to return to killing afterwards. It must be immediate, full, and unconditional - for at least 30 days to ensure it is secure and guaranteed.
On the orders from Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces Vladimir Putin, the Russian side will declare a ceasefire for humanitarian considerations on the days of the 80th anniversary of the victory, from 12:00 a.m. on May 8 to 12:00 a.m. on May 11.
