"We've been granted a sneak peek courtesy of a new video from Sam Smith. The British singer will be bringing their intimate To Be Free show as the venue's reopening residency. Smith will begin a 20-night run at the Castro from February 10. Yesterday, Smith posted a short video of themselves checking out the new space and singing in the auditorium. It's not known exactly when the video was taken, but it was probably during a visit Smith made a few weeks ago."
"A couple of years ago, it was acquired by new owners, Another Planet Entertainment. It has spent over $40 million on an extensive refurbishment. This has prompted some concern. Some locals worried that the new owners would transform the theatre into a mainstream entertainment venue. Another Planet has said the Castro Theatre's business model as a repertory cinema wasn't working."
The Castro Theatre in San Francisco closed for two years for an extensive renovation and will reopen with a new configuration supporting both sit-down and standing events. The venue first opened in 1922 and became a repertory cinema in the late 1970s. New owners Another Planet Entertainment acquired the theatre a couple of years ago and invested over $40 million in refurbishment, installing modern HVAC, lighting, and restrooms while attempting to restore original architectural details. Some locals expressed concern that the renovation would mainstream the venue. Sam Smith will launch a 20-night To Be Free residency at the Castro beginning February 10 and shared a short video of visiting and singing in the auditorium.
