Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued an order to lower flags in remembrance of the Pulse nightclub shooting victims for the ninth anniversary. However, unlike past years, he failed to acknowledge the LGBTQ+ and Hispanic communities specifically in his declaration. Previously, DeSantis had recognized these identities in his statements, particularly after backlash in 2019 when he initially omitted them. This year, his order broadly mentioned the tragedy but excluded those identities, raising concerns among LGBTQ+ advocates and community leaders about the implications of this omission, given his recent policies against diversity and inclusion.
Nine years ago, on June 12, 2016, a shooter claiming alliance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant committed a horrific act of terrorism at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
This year, instead of acknowledging the LGBTQ and Hispanic communities, DeSantis's order only referenced the tragedy broadly without identifying those specifically affected.
