PepsiCo is responding to a mandate from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to reduce artificial ingredients in their products. CEO Ramon Laguarta announced the company is already making progress, with over 60% of its portfolio free from artificial colors. The push aligns with broader governmental efforts to eliminate petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the food supply. Initiatives include setting national standards and timelines for the transition to natural ingredients, with specific target dates for phasing out certain synthetic dyes by the end of next year. The move is celebrated as a significant public health achievement.
"We've been leading the transformation of the industry now for a long time on sodium reduction, sugar reduction and better fats," Laguarta said.
"Sixty percent-plus of our (portfolio) today doesn't have any artificial colors," he said - and the company is "undergoing that transition."
"This is a huge win for public health and long overdue," said certified nutritionist Liana Werner-Gray.
"Initiating the process to revoke authorization for two synthetic food colorings... and working with industry to eliminate six remaining synthetic dyes... by the end of next year."
