On 29 July 2024, Axel Rudakubana attacked a dance class in Southport, killing three girls aged six to nine and injuring several others. The 17-year-old, armed with a kitchen knife, ambushed the children during their summer holiday. He later pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder. Despite his violent history and previous referrals to the counterterrorism Prevent programme, officials did not classify the attack as terrorism, leading to widespread riots across the UK in response to the incident.
