San Jose transit agency considers regional sales tax measure - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

The Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is deliberating participation in a regional sales tax district established by Senate Bill 63 to enhance transit funding in the Bay Area by 2026. VTA's board faces decisions on opting into this measure, creating their own, or implementing both. The tax could provide significant revenue for VTA, especially aiding obligations to Caltrain, while discussions of renewing Measure A, set to expire in 2036, could also be on the horizon. Stakeholders emphasize the need for VTA to prioritize local rider interests amidst these financing options.
Monica Mallon stated, "The thing the board needs to consider the most is VTA's own interest. VTA has clearly shown that they're able to recover and grow ridership, and I think that really shows that riders would benefit from more service and this is a growing market."
The proposed SB 63 would allow transit agencies to add a sales tax on the November 2026 ballot, providing a potential revenue source for transit in the Bay Area.
