Sonia Bustamante heads new SAFE Center
"My family is very politically active in the Central Valley. Growing up, I saw how some communities get the short end of the stick in resources."
"I am deeply grateful for the countless contributions she has made to our community. She helped lead our efforts to form an Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice, and to establish programs to provide immigrant healthcare (Contra Costa Cares) and protect immigrants at risk of deportation (Stand Together Contra Costa)."
"Contra Costa County is home to more than 300,000 foreign-born residents-over one-fourth of the county's population. They are teachers, nurses, artists, students, entrepreneurs and essential workers who contribute more than $16.8 billion to our local economy."
Sonia Bustamante comes from a politically active family in California's Central Valley, with her father serving as speaker of the Assembly and lieutenant governor. After graduating from Cal Berkeley, she pursued public service work as a labor organizer and legislative director before joining Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia's office for ten years, where she became chief of staff and helped establish programs including an Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice, immigrant healthcare initiatives, and deportation protection programs. In December 2025, she assumed the role of director of The SAFE Center, a community hub designed to connect immigrant individuals and families with resources and opportunities. Contra Costa County's 300,000 foreign-born residents represent over one-fourth of the population and contribute more than $16.8 billion to the local economy.
