"Scott Wiener has said over and over that he will never run a race against Nancy Pelosi, and I trust his word. Regardless, the Democratic Party needs a new kind of leader who is not a part of the establishment, because the establishment has failed us,"
"I don't think anybody's really imagined seriously that she was going to lose her seat any time over the last few decades,"
State Senator Scott Wiener is preparing a campaign for the U.S. House seat long held by Nancy Pelosi and is expected to announce a bid next week. Wiener previously filed paperwork as a 2028 candidate for Pelosi's seat and has said he would not run while Pelosi seeks re-election. Pelosi has not said whether she will seek re-election in 2026. Progressive challenger Saikat Chakrabarti is campaigning against Pelosi and argues the Democratic Party needs a non-establishment leader. Chakrabarti's campaign circulated internal polling indicating San Francisco Democrats may favor generational change. Political analysts view Wiener's timing as politically significant.
