Shireen McSpadden, who led San Francisco's Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing for five years and worked in City Hall for 23 years, announced her departure effective June 30. Mayor Daniel Lurie will now have the opportunity to appoint new leadership to the department. McSpadden expressed confidence in the department and its partners while thanking Lurie for his leadership. During her tenure beginning in April 2021 under Mayor London Breed, the homeless population increased 7% between 2022 and 2024, rising from 7,754 to 8,328 individuals, though the unsheltered population remained relatively flat. The latest point-in-time count from January has not yet been publicly released.
