The Board of Supervisors passed Mayor Daniel Lurie's budget with a 10-1 vote, despite opposition from District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder. Fielder criticized significant funding increases for the police and sheriff's departments amidst cuts to programs for immigrant families and BIPOC communities. The budget decision concludes a lengthy process aimed at addressing an $800 million deficit. In addition, proposed changes to Proposition C to allocate funds from permanent homeless housing to temporary shelters have raised concerns, as the city attorney warned that these changes could lead to lawsuits.
Parts of this budget are indefensible. In a deficit year, SFPD and the sheriff's department got a $50 million increase while programs serving immigrant families, and BIPOC were gutted.
Changing those funds, which were generated from a 2018 ballot measure tax on business that make over $50 million in gross receipts, has been controversial because they give Lurie powers that weren't set out in the measure.
