South Korea's acting President Han Duck-soo resigns DW 05/01/2025

Han Duck-soo announced his resignation as acting president of South Korea, likely in preparation for a presidential campaign. His decision comes as he is seen as a potential candidate for the conservative People Power Party, which has been in disarray after the recent martial law imposed by previous President Yoon Suk Yeol. Han faced impeachment shortly after taking office due to political conflicts with opposition parties. As he steps down, the Supreme Court's ruling on election violations regarding the Democratic Party's leading candidate, Lee Jae-myung, also poses complications for the upcoming election.
"I have two paths ahead of me. One is completing the heavy responsibility that I handle now. The other is putting down that responsibility and taking a heavier responsibility," Han said.
"I've finally determined to put down my post to do what I can and what I have to help overcome the crises facing us," the politician said.
Han was appointed acting president after the opposition-controlled parliament voted to impeach Yoon, whose removal from office paved the way for the upcoming snap presidential election to be held on June 3.
Meanwhile, South Korea's Supreme Court on Thursday overturned a lower court's acquittal of Democratic Party presidential frontrunner Lee Jae-myung on charges of election law violation.
