"You shouldn't die in training right?"
"They took a perfectly healthy, well-conditioned young man, put him through training, and he died,"
"He didn't die. He was killed,"
"From the time I arrived at the hospital, no one with SFPD came and approached us to tell us exactly what happened,"
Jon-Marques Psalms, a 30-year-old San Francisco police recruit and former football player with a blue belt in jiu jitsu, suffered a medical emergency during a training drill on August 22 and died two days later in the hospital. The city's chief medical examiner reported severe head trauma and internal injuries, including kidney failure and liver damage. Family members say no SFPD representative initially explained the incident and are seeking a second independent autopsy and pursuing legal action. The family believes the drill involved RedMan Training Gear, a padded suit used to simulate an aggressor in high-intensity scenarios.
