San Francisco will host its Lunar New Year festival with traditional events such as the parade and flower market returning for the Year of the Horse. Organizers introduced new elements, including Maverick, the first-ever mascot intended to connect the community. Maverick merchandise will be sold online with all proceeds directed back into the Chinatown community. Chinatown businesses rely heavily on festival revenue, sometimes earning as much as in three or four other months combined. Millions of visitors come for the parade and month-long activities. The SFPD will deploy uniformed, plainclothes, and specialized units to keep attendees safe.
