Santa Clara officials have approved a $1.9 billion budget for 2025-26 and a $1.4 billion budget for 2026-27, along with a $500,000 allocation for a financial consultant. Despite restoring reserves to $80 million, the city faces a $624 million backlog in infrastructure repairs. Councilmember Karen Hardy stresses the need for fiscal analysis to determine the efficacy of spending and address the city's declining public infrastructure, exemplified by the closed swim center due to maintenance neglect. A $400 million bond aims to tackle some of these issues.
"The goal is to create additional capacity to fund services, infrastructure and other needs that aren't included in this budget," Lee said at the meeting.
"In all cases with the budget, (we're asking) why are we charging ourselves for this, is this a good choice," Hardy told San José Spotlight.
