SFMTA has commenced issuing speed camera citations at 33 city intersections. A testing phase since March revealed that drivers have begun to slow down, indicating the program's effectiveness. Significant data illustrates 350,000 speed violations since the outset, highlighting the urgency of tackling reckless driving. Fines, varying from $50 to $500, will generate revenue for safer street initiatives. Advocates suggest enhancing the speed camera efforts alongside additional safety measures to achieve broader objectives such as Vision Zero, aiming for no traffic-related fatalities or serious injuries.
Speed cameras dramatically shift behavior and can reduce the number of severe and fatal crashes by as much as 58 percent, wrote Walk San Francisco's Marta Lindsey.
The city has been testing the cameras out with a warning period since March. Data from the warning period shows drivers are already slowing down before any fines have been issued.
