Padres Release Martin Maldonado, Outright Tyler Wade
Briefly

The Padres released catcher Martín Maldonado and optioned infielder/outfielder Wade to Triple-A El Paso. Maldonado, a seasoned glove-first backstop, has seen his performance decline as he nears 39. This season, Maldonado struggled with a .204 batting average while newly acquired Freddy Fermin contributed to their roster changes. Wade, primarily a utility player, also faced challenges at the plate this season. Both players were affected by the Padres' need for catching support amid budget constraints and performance issues from current players.
Maldonado's previously-excellent glovework has declined as he has pushed into his late 30s. Given his poor offense, his value is mostly reduced to intangibles.
Maldonado hit .204/.245/.327 while Díaz slashed .201/.266/.304, clearly demonstrating the catchers needed help behind the plate.
The Friars addressed their need by acquiring Freddy Fermin from the Royals, which pushed Maldonado off the roster.
Wade, a glove-first utility guy, has hit just .206/.309/.252 this year but can provide defensive versatility and steal bases.
