SF Giants finally make splashy offseason signing: A 103-year-old theater
"a significant moment in the city's cultural life,"
"a civic institution deeply committed to San Francisco's long-term vitality through sports and entertainment."
"Acquiring the Curran expands our commitment to San Francisco and reinforces our core belief that sports, arts and culture are essential to San Francisco's identity, economy and resurgence,"
"We intend to honor the Curran's storied past steeped in Broadway shows and musicals and continue to build and expand the offerings of live performances reflective of our city's culture, inclusive of music, comedy and family entertainment."
The San Francisco Giants purchased the Curran Theatre, a 1,600-seat venue on Geary Street near Union Square that opened in 1922. Carole Shorenstein Hays owned and operated the theater from 2010 until 2019, lost a long legal battle with former partner Robert Nederlander, later settled and regained sole ownership before turning operation over to ATG Entertainment. BroadwaySF will continue to operate the Curran under its agreement with ATG. The Giants framed the acquisition as an expansion of their civic commitment to San Francisco's cultural life and plan to preserve Broadway offerings while broadening live entertainment. The purchase arrives during the MLB offseason amid questions about the team's financial outlook for on-field spending.
