World's largest almond company to close historic 53-acre Northern Calif. plant
Briefly

Blue Diamond Growers, a key player in Sacramento's food production and a mainstay for over a century, is shutting down its historic Midtown processing plant due to prohibitive costs. This closure, affecting approximately 600 jobs, follows a trend of food processing companies leaving the city. The cooperative plans to consolidate operations in its other facilities in the Central Valley, offering severance to affected employees. Despite the closure, Blue Diamond intends to maintain its corporate headquarters in Sacramento, though the future use of the iconic plant site remains unclear.
In a June 6 news release, Blue Diamond Growers President and CEO Kai Bockmann explained that running a plant from the historic Midtown buildings - some on the 53-acre campus date back to 1914 - "has become too costly and inefficient."
"Streamlining our manufacturing plants is the right business move to further strengthen our market-leading position and bring increased value to our grower members," Bockmann said.
